Mina the Hollower: Yacht Club Games' Make-or-Break Moment | Gaming News (2025)

The future of Yacht Club Games hangs in the balance with the upcoming release of Mina the Hollower. This studio, known for its retro-themed platformer Shovel Knight, is at a critical juncture. The game's launch, originally scheduled for October, was indefinitely postponed just weeks before its release.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Yacht Club's co-founder and studio head, Sean Velasco, admitted, "It's make-or-break for sure." The success of Mina the Hollower is crucial for the studio's survival. Velasco believes that selling 500,000 copies would be a golden achievement, while even 200,000 would be impressive. However, if the game fails to reach these sales targets, the studio may need to downsize and seek alternative funding.

Mina the Hollower, Yacht Club's second intellectual property, has been in development for six years. The studio raised $1.2 million through Kickstarter in 2022, initially planning a December 2023 release. However, the game's scope expanded beyond expectations, attributed to the inexperience of first-time team leader Alec Faulkner. Faulkner, who created the concept and was overseeing the project, admitted that he may not be the best fit for such a role.

To reduce costs, Yacht Club is transitioning to a remote studio model, focusing on one project at a time. This shift is a departure from their previous approach, where they divided their efforts between multiple projects, including an unannounced 3D Shovel Knight title that has been put on hold.

"What we're doing in the future is trying to figure out ways to have a game come out every couple of years instead of every five or six," said Nick Wozniak, another co-founder of Yacht Club. "We haven't released a game in so long."

The studio's journey began in 2011, and Shovel Knight, released in 2014, became their flagship title, selling over 2.65 million copies. In 2019, Yacht Club bid farewell to Shovel Knight to focus on new projects. Now, with Mina the Hollower, they face a challenging moment, and its success or failure could define their future.

And this is the part where opinions might differ: Do you think Yacht Club's decision to delay the game was a wise move to ensure its quality, or was it a risky strategy that could backfire? Share your thoughts in the comments!
